I have been using up scraps. With my finger bandaged (previous post) I still managed to use my rotary cutter to attack my 1980's and 1990's stash.
I decided if I couldn't cut it into 3" squares or a big 9 1/2" square then I wasn't keeping it. I got rid of fabrics that were too lightweight or too heavy for quilting. I was ruthless!
I can make 2 1/2" HST out of the 3" squares.
I can make 2 1/2" HST out of the 3" squares.
This is my stack of 9 1/2" squares. An odd size, you say. Well there was method to my madness.
I matched up pairs of squares that had contrast like the two pieces below.
I stacked the two pieces, one on top of the other.
I cut 2 1/2 " slices on each side of the square. Then I separated the pieces to make two mirror image 8 1/2" unfinished blocks. Kind of a "Buggy Barn" technique~
I've got enough squares cut for 100 uneven 9-patch blocks. It should be a pretty squirrely quilt but I promise I'll take a picture regardless of the results. I've already sewn 25 blocks.
When I get this silly quilt out of the way I can feel good about clearing out a plastic container of fabrics I didn't want to keep anymore. And, I'm sure I can find a way to fill that container up in a FLASH.
My finger is healing well. I have to keep it bandaged so it has some protection but I have been able to type for the first time today.

I recognize some of that fabric, Robin.
Smart way to tackle old scraps. I think your scrappy uneven 9-patch is not going to look squirrelly, silly girl. : ) It will be a great, scrap-happy quilt!
Well you've just utterly inspired me as to what I should do with a layer cake I recently bought! I was just over at Kathie's where she has her lovely quilt on display that uses the same block design - and your technique is perfect! Now, all I want to do is get cutting and sewing - maybe I'll do a few before cleaning the bathroom ... like having chocolate after dinner ;-)
