Joe the Quilter on the History Blog today

The Beamish foundation in Northern England has constructed Joe the Quilter's cottage from the remains that were excavated.

Thanks so much for posting about this, Robin. I had never heard of Joe the Quilter and found this really interesting. I have ancestors who lived in the Durham/Northumberland area in the early 1800s (maybe earlier, except I haven't found them yet!) through the 1860s. Unlike Joe, they were coalminers so I suppose their homes were not so much like Joe's. And I loved the accents of the people on the video. Again, thanks for sharing!

Fascinating.
I had never heard of Joe the Quilter, either.
Apparently I have many ancestors from England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland. But I haven't looked closely enough to know if Northumberland is an area from which any of them come. I will check that out.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Thanks for this link. I had heard of Joe, but didn't know about this - it's not close to me, but I'm going to try to get up there to see it in person.
