This quilt called "Timeless Treasures" by Mabeth Oxenreider came out in the American Patchwork & Quilting magazine in June of 1996. I'm sure you've seen dozens of them on the internet, maybe 100's.
Well, I wasn't doing much quilting in 1996 so I missed out on this one. But, as soon as I saw it I knew I would want to make one There have been multiple variations of this design, but the original is my favorite.
My husband and I have been searching for something (that we still haven't found) for weeks and in so doing have been cleaning out closets, drawers, shelves, and boxes. I found all my Thimbleberries fabrics in a closet downstairs. This is a 5 gallon tote so there's lots and lots of fabirc.
And, I decided it was time to use it up and what better project than this "Timeless Treasures" quilt.
It's only taken me 25 years to get around to making it. The original pattern has 6" blocks set 14 X 18 for a total of 252 blocks . The quilt finishes at 84" X 108". I made one block and decided it was too small for me. I wanted bigger blocks of color.
So, I've made six 8" blocks that I like much better. (That lower left block is just as ugly as it looks.) Some fabrics just don't have a chance 😐. But, I'm still going to use it. I will just get rid of the rest of that fabric.
I'm going to make the quilt top 10 X 11 which will finish at 80" X 88" and is a much better size I think. That's 110 blocks total.
I'm curious how much fabric I will really use and will the tub look just as full when I finish this quilt top?

I found one of my favorite quotes in our search through everything.

better late than never! now you will really enjoy making it and perhaps wouldn't have before? lovely fabrics never go out of style and sometimes even the ugly ones...LOL stand back and squint and perhaps it will look better? off/on dismal here as well but thankfully warmer
Oh yes, I remember that pattern and had it saved for years. I can confidently tell you that your bin of fabrics will be just as full when you finish this top, old fabric never goes away, especially the old uglies we don't want to use anymore (maybe we never did!). However I think the ugly block will blend in nicely with the whole selection of fabrics since they're of the same vintage.
Oh I made a blue and white version of this one to commemorate my Father's life after he passed.. as a business person he always wore white or blue dress shirts so I chose those colors with grays....it is hanging in our hallway...
I named it "Je me souviens". {I remember} in his honor...
I love that pattern too...looking forward to seeing how yours comes together...no snow here, just fog also...
hugs, Julierose
I do remember this quilt. I love it and I think your version will be beautifully brighter. I like the color of the lower left block (at least on my computer screen). I think it will make the other, more colorful blocks sing.
I love that quote! It is a new one to me.
Were you able to find what you were looking for? I hope so! It can be frustrating. I have been cleaning a small closet in our living room, just one box a day. (I think there are 5 or 6.) Today the box contained two family history things I thought I would never see again. One is an old school book of my mom's that contains poems and readings for recitations, a common school assignment in the 1920s. I was thrilled to see it.
Oh the memories. I made this quilt. It is in a bin with other quilt tops. I think it is time to pull it out and get it quilted. It was a fun quilt to make. I can't wait to see yours. Hugs, Cathy
When I saw the full quilt I gulped but when you showed the blocks it's quite do-able. And a stash buster for sure. And I like that bottom left square.
I love that pattern and what a find with those Thimbleberries fabrics! Yes your bin will probably multiply as you use them. ;)
Well I don’t remember that quilt but it is beautiful and I hope it uses up a lot of that fabric stash. This is the perfect quilt for those fabrics that might not be our favorites.
I definitely remember that quilt, because I bought the magazine and planned to make it. My quilting budget then was zero, so I was slowly saving remnant pieces and scraps from my mom's quilts. In the meantime, Mom asked if she could borrow the magazine, and she made the quilt. Eventually it became mine, so I decided I didn't need to make it myself. I have since gifted it to my oldest daughter, but have very fond memories of Mom making it, and then having it on my bed.
Very clever of you to enlarge the blocks and make them more doable.
Would you like a few Thimbleberries pieces I came across recently? Nothing huge, but it would add variety.
Yes I remember that quilt! I always intended to make one myself but then would talk myself out of it and make something else instead.:)
