Oh boy! I need some help!

I didn't think it would be so hard to figure out what color to use for the cornerstones in this quilt.  I've never had this much trouble before.

I originally thought I would use these light star grunge squares.  But they do nothing for the quilt with this border.

So I thought I would use the same fabric as the sashing for the border and see how that looks - meh!

I found a coral colored fabric in the stash.  Coral comes from the sea, right?

Ooooh!  Too bold!

I tried a less intense red.  It's interesting but it doesn't blow my socks off.

This red is nice but how does it look with the blue border?

That blue border looks like water but I think it draws too much attention to itself.

I tried a gray/brown from the Riverbanks line by Jeanne Horton.  It's the right theme - kinda.

And then with the tan border. . . . . . . . .

I think I'm going to have to come up with another plan.

Please, please, please make some suggestions, I obviously need help.

Robin

I think it boils down to a matter of personal taste. I personally like the flashes of the more subtle red for the cornerstones. It's hard to tell if that looks OK with the blue border without getting a picture of the whole thing.

Try blue-gray cornerstones of the same value as the sashing. And use the watery blue for the borders.

Try dark blue and maybe a different border fabric?
I'm just throwing that out it only has to please you : )

I just looked at you're June 5th post when all the blocks together
the darkest squares look good maybe that would work for the post?

Personally, I like the third red cornerstones with the blue border, but I really have been drawn to red/white/blue this week as I visited a few quilt shops, so maybe I'm not very objective. Really liking this quilt!

IMHO - Nope to the brown border. Boring. Blah. Ordinary. Those are the words that come to mind when looking a"t the brown vs blue borders. I like the red (last one) cornerstones. Yes, the blue border says "look at me", but those red cornerstones say "not so fast". They have enough oomph to stand up to the border without taking over themselves. Wasn't there a whole round of "red is a neutral" challenges and sew-alongs about 2 years ago?

I'm with Janet. I love the third red and the blue water border. I'm sure it will be wonderful no matter what you chose. None of them look bad to me. I just LOVE the red cornerstones.

I actually prefer the neutrals in the bottom pictures, but wonder if maybe you should go a bit darker. I think the problem is that the squares are competing with the lighter snowballs in almost every color seen! I am thinking you should try taking a darker neutral and putting a little square of color in it {economy block?} and check that out. Maybe having the inside of the cornerstone be 'on point' could make a difference. Just thinking out loud here. I do think the quilt needs a sashing! Good luck! I know you'll get it worked out to the best.:)

My first thought for cornerstones was dark brown. Then, indigo blue. I would stay away from the red.

You have a lot of opinions already. Of the three reds I like the third one and it might be just the "spark" you need, with either the blue border or the tan. Whatever you decide, it's going to be really nice!

I love these blocks, Robin! What a wonderful quilt. When the first photo appeared and I read that you want thoughts about cornerstones, my first thought was a dark, maroon/burgundy red. I like the third red you've shown but still wonder how a much darker red might look. I just went back to the photo from the pattern and see that she didn't use cornerstones at all. I like blue border better than the tan. You'll get it figured out--you always do (and you do it so well)!

I like the second to last combination.... the gray/brown Riverbanks cornerstone with the blue border. The cornerstone fabric looks like a moss that grows on rocks near the water and the border looks like water. I also really like the placement of that bottom right block! It looks like some of the birds "escaped" from the block and have filled the inner border! Love it!

I can see you've had lots of suggestions already. I wondered about something like Audrey suggested, that is maybe to find a way to sneak two colours into the posts, maybe a darker neutral (charcoal?) and a bit of red. Sometimes I just lay my bits down and try literally every fabric I can find, even the ones I wouldn't expect to work. Things can be surprising.

what happens is you choose a dark colour like the background of the blocks for the corner stone......
sometimes sashing and borders comes so easy other times a real struggle......goodluck.......

Ongoing progress

I finished the center with the gifts and put on a double star border.  It now measure 48" square. Now I'm at a standstill. . .  I&#...
